Sherlock Holmes Review was a critically acclaimed periodical devoted to the world of Sherlock Holmes and Arthur Conan Doyle. Founded in 1986 on the principle that confining Sherlockian interest strictly to the Canon did an injustice to the larger world of Sherlock Holmes. Throughout its ten year run, Sherlock Holmes Review found a unique niche in the crowded world of Sherlockian Publishing. The philosophy of SHR was to emulate the spirit, and to some degree the look, of The Strand Magazine. Thus, topics found between the covers of Sherlock Holmes Review covered traditional scholarship, Sherlockian film and television, pastiche, and the non-Holmesian works of Arthur Conan Doyle. One of the most popular offerings was "The SHR Interview." This regular feature introduced to the readership people who were previously only names on the spine of a book, or larger than life characters on the screen. Another popular endeavor of SHR was a series of symposia sponsored by the publication. The first of these took place in December of 1987 on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. This was the Centennial year of A Study in Scarlet and the Granada television series starring Jeremy Brett was in full bloom. But few Americans knew how such a faithful adaptation of the stories had come about. By engaging Michael Cox, the creator and producer of the series, as the keynote speaker, fans were given a chance to hear first hand the inside story of the creation of this remarkable show.
